English words from Hindi

The word ‘Hindi’ comes from the Sanskrit language. It is derived from the name of India, which is itself derived from the Indus River Valley civilization. In the 15th century, the Mughal Empire conquered most of northern India and established Delhi as its capital. During this period, Persian became the official language of the empire. After the British took over in 1857, they imposed Urdu on the people of India as the national language. However, many Indians continued to speak Hindustani, a mixture of Hindi and Urdu.
